Kate Middleton and Prince William set to run Sport Relief 2012 mile

Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge are set to run the London Mile together for Sport Relief. Organisers are in talks for the royal couple to join the fundraising event, with Wills having taken part in previous years. The Prince, 29, and Kate, 30, are expected to run down The Mall near Buckingham Palace on March 25, while other miles will be run in major cities around the UK.

A source close to the event said: “We are in talks with the Prince’s representatives and understand he is eager to support the event, as he has done previously. We’re hopeful Kate will be able to do it too. “It’s a huge honour to have the support of the Royal Family for this event, which raises millions of pounds for people in poverty in both the UK and abroad. We hope hundreds of thousands of Brits will follow in their footsteps to run a Sport Relief mile somewhere in the country to raise cash.” A separate Westminster Mile will be held on March 14, which will see more than 100 MPs race through St James’s Park after Prime Minster’s Questions.
And insiders are optimistic they will include David Cameron, who took part in 2010 before his election to Downing Street.
The charity launched its campaign yesterday, with celebrities lined-up for fundraising stunts and challenges. Comedian David Walliams has already raised more than £1million by swimming 140 miles of the River Thames. JLS have recorded an official Sport Relief single and Blue Peter host Helen Skelton is in the middle of a 500-mile Antarctic trek. Comics Miranda Hart and John Bishop will also play key roles.

And BBC1 bosses are preparing Let’s Dance for Sport Relief, hosted by Steve Jones and Alex Jones. Radio One DJ Fearne Cotton was among the stars unveiling official merchandise for the charity launch yesterday. Also lending their support were boyband JLS, football legend Gary Lineker and his model wife Danielle, comedian David Walliams and Denise Van Outen. Get Sport Relief T-shirts (£8 each) from Sports Direct and socks from Sainsbury’s (£2.50 a pair).
The total raised for Sport Relief 2012 will be unveiled on March 23 in a night of live TV on BBC1
